The thrill of embarking on an adventure is an emotion we can all relate to. The allure of the unknown, the promise of new experiences, and the anticipation of what lies ahead – all these feelings converged as I prepared to set foot on Cuban soil. However, this trip held a unique significance for me, as it had been 14 long years since my last visit.
Cuba, like many other places, had its own share of challenges, particularly the economic hardships brought on by the global pandemic. The country has been closed for a year and a half, but it is now fighting its way back now that tourists have fortunately started to return.
I will admit that Cuba surprised me positively in many ways. Firstly, there was the accommodation. We use casas particulares, which is a type of bed and breakfast. I travelled around to see several different casas particulares in Havana and Trinidad and they fully lived up to my expectations and more. Some had a more modern look and others had a colonial style. It was as though I had stumbled upon small boutique hotels, each offering a cosy sanctuary with just 2 to 8 rooms.
Cuba’s culinary landscape has radically transformed in the 14 years since my last visit. The cuisine, which was somewhat uninspiring back then, has evolved considerably. The range of dining options has expanded, with new spices and a greater variety of vegetables and salads adorning plates. The emergence of privately-owned restaurants, known as “paladares,” has undoubtedly been a game-changer. The service and quality at these establishments surpass the state-owned alternatives. My recommendation? opt for the private restaurants for a more memorable dining experience.
In the past, accessing the internet in Cuba was a luxury rarely available to travellers. However, times have changed, and Wi-Fi is now accessible at both casas particulares and all-inclusive resorts by the beach. At one point, the internet was completely unavailable at the casa I was staying in. A guide informed me that this disruption was due to the government’s decision to shut down the system in response to demonstrations that were taking place in the south of Cuba. Such instances are not uncommon, illustrating the complex nature of Cuba.
Cuba continues to exude its timeless charm, making it a destination of perpetual fascination. The majestic buildings of Havana, nostalgic rides in vintage American cars, spirited salsa dancing, and the infectious rhythms of Cuban music are all emblematic of this nation. The allure of stunning beaches, refreshing mojitos, and the warm hospitality of the Cuban people further enrich the experience. The pastel-coloured houses of Trinidad, along with the aroma of big cigars, add to the ever-expanding list of Cuba’s treasures.
