Is April not the right month for you? Explore the best travel spots in March and May as well.

Botswana – The Magic of the Chobe River

Zebra on the Chobe River in Botswana

Botswana is a fantastic safari destination, and in April there is plenty of opportunity to experience the country’s impressive natural surroundings.

April is the start of Botswana’s dry season, which is the country’s winter, and the month is generally characterised by blue skies with very little rain. Compared to previous months, temperatures drop slightly in April, but it is still warm. Even though it is the dry season, there may still be a little precipitation.

As the dry season continues, the animals’ access to water disappears, and they therefore congregate in places where there is water to be found, for example on the banks of the Chobe River.

Although April is the start of the dry season, it is still shoulder season (the period between low season and high season) in Botswana, and you will find that there are fewer visitors here than when you get further into the dry season.

Three reasons to visit Botswana in April

  • Dry season with blue and cloudless skies
  • Good time to experience wildlife in the national parks
  • Fewer visitors than later in the dry season

Sri Lanka – Sun and cloudless skies

Blue sky on the beach at Mirissa in Sri Lanka

For many, April is one of the best months to visit beautiful Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s weather is affected by monsoons, but, in April, the northeast monsoon has subsided, and the southwest monsoon has not yet fully started. This means that you can expect sun and blue skies on almost the entire island.

The whale season in Sri Lanka lasts from October to April, and it is therefore still possible to go whale watching at Mirissa on the south coast of Sri Lanka.

On 14 April, the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year is celebrated, which is one of Sri Lanka’s biggest feasts. The New Year is celebrated through a lot of games, for example balancing a lime on a spoon, sack races and pillow fights.

Three reasons to visit Sri Lanka in April

  • Sun and blue skies in most of Sri Lanka
  • Whale watching at Mirissa
  • Opportunity to experience the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year

South Africa – adventurous autumn

Lion in the river in Kruger National Park in South Africa

South Africa is a big country, and in April you can experience several types of seasons, depending on where you travel to.

In Cape Town, the year is divided into classic seasons, and here April is an autumn month. The landscapes are covered in reddish-brownish shades, and the weather is warm and pleasant with a limited amount of rain, although a little more than in the previous summer months – in return, you get fewer visitors and lower prices in April, but definitely not less experiences. The autumn weather in Cape Town is ideal for outdoor activities, for example climbing Table Mountain, visiting the wine country or simply enjoying the sight of the beautiful landscapes dressed in autumn colours.

In the northeastern part of South Africa, where Kruger National Park is located, there is instead a distinction between the rainy season and the dry season, with April being right at the beginning of the dry season. This means that the surroundings remain lush after the previous months’ rain, but the colours start to change from green to brown, and the leaves begin to fall off, making it easier to spot the wildlife in the national park.

Three reasons to visit South Africa in April

  • Pleasant, warm autumn temperatures
  • Easier to spot animals on safari as the dry season progresses
  • Fewer travellers and lower prices in Cape Town

Zambia – the roaring beauty of Victoria Falls

Rainbow over Victoria Falls in Zambia

If you dream of seeing the mighty Victoria Falls in full force, then April is one of the best months to go to Zambia.

April is at the beginning of Zambia’s dry season, which means that the force of the waterfall is at one of its peaks right after a long rainy seaso. At the same time, it rains less, so you can expect to experience the waterfall in dry weather.

Water particles and haze will spread from the spectacular waterfall, forming rainbows that can often be seen at the waterfall. In April, you consequently get the best of both seasons: dry weather and a full, roaring waterfall.

Three reasons to visit Victoria Falls in Zambia in April

  • The force of the waterfall is at one of its peaks
  • Beautiful rainbows at the waterfall
  • Dry weather and blue skies

Peru – Trekking and traditions

Woman walking on the Inca Trail in Peru

April is a great month to go to Peru, as there is a high probability of dry weather throughout the country.

In the Amazon rainforest, there is always a risk of rain, but April is one of the months with the highest chance of dry weather. If you dream of exploring the wonders of the rainforest in dry weather, April is therefore an ideal month.

In the Andes, where you will find Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail and Cusco, April is in the dry season. This means good conditions for outdoor activities, so if you dream of hiking the Inca trek, we recommend that you do it between April and November to avoid mud on the trek.

In 2026, Easter falls in March and April (March 29th – April 6th), and Easter in Latin America, known as Semana Santa, is a major celebration. If you’re travelling to Peru during Easter, you will very likely witness the Easter festivities through religious processions and rituals.

Three reasons to visit Peru in April

  • High probability of dry weather throughout the country
  • Good time to hike the Inca trek
  • Opportunity to experience the Easter celebrations

Mauritius – African summer paradise

Sunset on Le Morne in Mauritius

Mauritius is an excellent destination in April – especially if you are looking for a paradisiacal beach holiday.

April is the last month of summer in Mauritius. In general, the summer months are the rainiest on the island, but as April is the last month of summer on the African island, you will have both the warm temperatures of summer and less rain than in the previous months. So there is plenty of opportunity for a relaxing and exotic beach holiday in April.

If you want to explore the stunning, colourful coral reefs of Mauritius, the sea is also clear and ideal for snorkelling in April.

Three reasons to visit Mauritius in April

  • Sunny days and warm temperatures
  • Ideal conditions for a beach holiday
  • Snorkelling opportunities

Galapagos Islands – Snorkelling and turtles

Green sea turtle in the waters of the Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are a popular destination in April – and for good reason.

April is in the ‘warm and wet’ season of the islands, when there is more rainfall, but high sea and air temperatures.

There are loads of opportunities for unique animal experiences on the Galapagos Islands in April. During the rainy season, there are, for example, calmer currents in the sea, which increases visibility and provides fantastic snorkelling conditions. April is also the month in which the first green sea turtles hatch from their eggs, so you may be lucky enough to see baby turtles.

Three reasons to visit the Galapagos Islands in April

  • High sea and air temperatures
  • Good visibility for snorkelling
  • Opportunity to experience baby turtles

The weather conditions also provide the perfect setting for outdoor activities in China’s beautiful, wild landscapes, for example in the Yangshou area, and, just like in Japan, you can actually also experience the beautiful cherry blossoms in China’s spring months, for example in Shanghai and Beijing.
