The world is worth exploring all year round. See also our suggestions on where to travel to in January and March.

Costa Rica – At one with nature

Girl walking through Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica

With its lush rainforests, spectacular volcanoes and beautiful beaches, Costa Rica is a veritable paradise for nature lovers. February is in the middle of the dry season in Costa Rica, and the sunny, relatively dry weather makes it a popular month to travel there.

Explore Costa Rica’s impressive wildlife in some of the country’s scenic national parks such as Tortuguero, Corcovado or Rincón de la Vieja.

Discover the fantastic nature with a treetop walk in Monteverde Cloud Forest or a hike to the Arenal Volcano.

3 reasons to visit Costa Rica in February:

• In the middle of the dry season

• It may be easier to spot the animals gathering around fewer watering holes.

• Excursions involving hiking, for example, are easier in dry weather

Sri Lanka – temples, tea plantations and tropical beaches

Sri Lanka has something for every taste all year round.

In February, the climate is predominantly mild throughout Sri Lanka. However, due to the country’s geographic location close to the equator, there is a risk of downpours throughout the year.

February is the perfect month to climb Little Adams Peak or Lion Rock (Sigiriya) as there is less likelihood of muddy, slippery paths and poor visibility due to rain.

If you love animals, February is also an excellent month to go on safari in Sri Lanka, as you may be lucky enough to spot leopards, elephants, bears, etc. If you’re going to Mirissa, there is also the option of going whale watching. February is right in the middle of whale season on Sri Lanka’s south coast, where you may be lucky enough to see dolphins and blue whales, for example.

Sri Lanka’s national day falls on 4 February and is celebrated across the country with ceremonies, parades and other celebrations marking Sri Lanka’s independence from British colonial rule in 1948.

3 reasons to visit Sri Lanka in February:

• Warm temperatures that give you a nice break from the winter cold

• Whale season on the south coast, where you may be lucky enough to see blue whales

• Good weather for outdoor activities

Uganda, also known as the Pearl of Africa, offers some of Africa’s most scenic landscapes, as well as the opportunity for some unique nature and wildlife experiences.

February is in the middle of one of Uganda’s dry seasons, when you can expect blue skies, sunshine and lush, green vegetation.

The country offers safaris in Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you may be lucky enough to spot leopards, hyenas, lions, elephants and antelopes. February is at the end of the dry season, meaning that months without rain cause animals to congregate around the few remaining waterholes.

In Uganda, you also have a unique opportunity to see the mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where almost half of the world’s free-living population lives. Gorilla tracking with experienced rangers is an absolute highlight in Uganda. February is one of the best months to go gorilla tracking as the dry season makes the trails less muddy.

3 reasons to visit Uganda in February:

• Dry season with blue skies, sunshine and less rain

• Easy to spot the animals on safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park, for example

• Good time for Gorilla tracking. It’s less physically demanding as the trails are not as muddy

Tanzania – Action on the savannah

Two cheetahs looking for prey

Tanzania is one of Africa’s most popular safari destinations – and for good reason.

February offers every opportunity for you to see nature’s harsh but fascinating life unfold. The many wildebeest on the Serengeti savannah are calving (until March). The young calves are vulnerable to the area’s predators, and you may therefore be lucky enough to see lions, etc. hunting at close range.

The birdlife in Tanzania is also great to experience in February. The resident birds are nesting, while many birds from Europe and North Africa also migrate to Tanzania between November and March to seek shelter from the winter chill.

3 reasons to visit Tanzania in February:

• Warm temperatures and mostly dry weather

• Opportunity to experience the large predators hunting for wildebeest calves

• Rich birdlife – both resident and migratory bird species

Colombia – Colourful colonial towns

Woman sitting on the street in La Candelaria in Bogotá, Colombia

Mountains, deserts, beaches, jungle – Colombia has it all, and February is an excellent month to explore the country’s diversity and varied nature. It’s the dry season and you can expect sunny days with warm weather – depending on how high up you are.

In the Andes, you’ll find three of Colombia’s exciting areas. The country’s capital, Bogotá, is a wonderful mix of modern architecture and old colonial-era buildings that ooze history. Located in the Andes at 2,600 m.a.s.l., the city offers spring-like daytime temperatures all year round. In Medellín, you can experience the city’s fascinating transformation from drug cartel capital to innovative metropolis. And in the Coffee Region, you’ll see scenic, lush landscapes and gain an insight into coffee production on a coffee farm.

February is also a good time to trek to the impressive Lost City, built by the Tayrona people in around 800 AD. At this time of year, the trails are dry, making it easier to hike.

3 reasons to visit Colombia in February:

• Dry season with sunny days

• Pleasant climate for hiking in rainforest or mountains

• Good time to trek to the Lost City as the trails are dry.

In Laos, you’ll find fairy-tale landscapes and welcoming local people.

Explore the former royal city of Luang Prabang, lined with French colonial buildings with Laotian features.

You can also enjoy nature on a boat trip on the Mekong River or a visit to the scenic Kuang Si Falls.

Kenya – Scenic safari landscapes

Green landscapes and elephant in Amboseli National Park in Kenya

Kenya is a fantastic safari destination all year round, where you can expect an exciting mix of unique nature and the exciting African wildlife.

February is a popular month to travel to Kenya. It might be dry season, but the landscapes are still lush after the rainy season in November and December.

The hot, dry weather means that there are fewer places where the animals can drink water. So, they gather around the few places that they can find it, making it easier for visitors to spot them.

There’s also plenty of opportunity to see Kenya’s exciting birdlife in February. The winter in Europe causes the birds to migrate south and spend the winter in warmer climes, including in Kenya.

And last but not least, Kenya offers fantastic beach holidays at Diani Beach, near Mombasa, where you can relax on the white sandy beaches or snorkel at the wonderful coral reef.

3 reasons to visit Kenya in February:

• Dry season, which makes it easier to spot wildlife on the savannah

• Rich birdlife, as many birds winter in Kenya

• Fabulous beach holiday at Diani Beach near Mombasa
