Madagascar – Unique wildlife and Independence Day

Close-up of lemurs in Andasibe-Mantadia National Park in Madagascar

June is one of Madagascar’s coldest and driest months, since it’s part of the country’s winter season, but it certainly doesn’t mean cold temperatures like we’re used to in Europe.

With warm and dry weather, June is ideal for exploring Madagascar’s extraordinary nature in its stunning national parks, such as the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park or Isalo National Park. Here, you can admire scenic landscapes while spotting the many unique species of lemurs.

If you’re interested in enjoying some of Madagascar’s tropical beaches, June offers ample opportunities for a beach holiday, with plenty of sunshine and relaxation. In fact, June marks the beginning of whale season, and at several beach destinations like Anakao and Sainte Marie, you might even spot whales from the shore.

If you’re in Madagascar on 26th June, you can also experience the festive Independence Day, celebrating the country’s independence from France, which took effect in 1960. Especially in the capital, houses will be decorated in the flag’s colours—red, white, and green—with military parades, singing, and dancing in the streets.

Peru – Delve into Inca culture

Person in costume at the Inti Raymi festival in Cusco, Peru

June offers many fantastic experiences in Peru.

In the mountains and highlands, where the world-famous Inca ruin, Machu Picchu, and the city of Cusco are located, it’s the dry season in June. The days bring clear and temperate weather, though the nights can get really cold, even reaching the freezing point. The clear weather, however, provides a likely chance of a spectacular view over Machu Picchu. If you seek adventure, June is also a good month for hiking the Inca Trail, with dry and accessible paths.

Cusco, the old Inca capital, is rich in history. On the 24th of June, Cusco hosts the Inti Raymi Festival, celebrating the traditional Inca culture with music, dance, and ceremonies – an experience that offers insight into Peru’s rich cultural heritage.

Although it rains throughout the year in the Amazon rainforest, there is a higher likelihood of dry weather this month. Whether you encounter rain or dry weather in the rainforest, roaming amongst the fascinating flora and fauna of the jungle is a unique experience.

3 reasons to visit Peru in June

  • Dry season in the mountainous and highland areas and ideal weather for e.g., the Inca Trail
  • Opportunity to experience the Inti Raymi Festival in Cusco
  • Higher likelihood of dry weather in the Amazon
