Brazil – Fantastic nature and wildlife

Capybara with bird on its back in the Pantanal in Brazil

August marks the dry season in Brazil, which coincides with the last of the country’s winter months.

Although there can be regional variations in the weather, it is generally warm and sunny, making August one of the best months to explore Brazil’s fantastic nature and wildlife.

The Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland, offers insight into one of Brazil’s unique ecosystems. Besides the dry season providing warm weather and less rain, the month is also one of the best times to witness the thriving wildlife, such as birds and reptiles. The lack of water brings animals to the remaining water sources, making them easier to spot. If you dream of seeing South America’s largest cat, the jaguar, your chances are best in August, as the reduced water in the wetlands draws jaguars to the riverbanks.

Although it rains throughout the year in the majestic Amazon rainforest, August is one of the months with the least rainfall. If you wish to explore the rainforest on foot with a hike, the dry season months are the prime time for it.

3 reasons to visit Brazil in August

  • Dry season with warm and sunny weather in most of the country
  • A great time to explore the Pantanal wetland, with increased chances of spotting wildlife
  • One of the driest months in the Amazon, making it ideal for hiking

Australia – Adventures from city to outback

Crocodile at Daintree River in northern Australia

Australia is located in the southern hemisphere, which means the seasons are the opposite of Europe’s. Therefore, it’s winter in Australia in August.

Winter in Australia means mild and pleasant weather in much of the country.

In the tropical northern part of the country, where cities like Darwin and Cairns are located, August marks the dry season, and the weather is warm and sunny. Here, you can experience the world’s largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef, where you might be fortunate enough to see humpback whales in August, or visit the 135 million-year-old Daintree Rainforest, where, for example, you might spot the world’s third largest bird, the cassowary.

In August, temperatures in central Australia are comfortable, and there’s very little rain. This makes it an ideal time to visit Uluru or Kata Tjuta National Park.

In Sydney and Melbourne, the weather is cooler but still mild compared to the European winter. At this time of year, you might also be lucky enough to spot whales from Sydney Harbour as they swim past Sydney on their journey to warmer waters in the north.

3 reasons to visit Australia in August

  • Warm and sunny in northern Australia
  • An ideal time to experience Uluru or Kata Tjuta when the weather isn’t too hot
  • Opportunity to see whales from the coast in Sydney

Bali – Beach holiday on the island of the gods

View of Bali's beautiful beach Sanur - seen from above

If you’re dreaming of a paradise island vibe in August, Bali in Indonesia is the perfect destination.

August is among the driest months of the year, which means plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures, and lower humidity than in the rainy season – delightful weather for both relaxation and adventure on the island.

Bali’s many beautiful beaches, such as those in Sanur, Amed, or Lovina, are a must-see at this time of year. Here, you can either take a dip in the turquoise waters or explore underwater life on a snorkelling trip. The dry season offers particularly good visibility beneath the water’s surface.

If you prefer hiking in breathtaking mountain landscapes, you can explore the many trekking routes around the mountain village of Munduk or climb Mount Batur and experience the sunset from the top. During the dry season, the paths are dry and therefore easier to traverse.

At the same time, Bali celebrates Indonesian Independence Day on 17th August. The entire island is alive with festive parades, colourful flags, and traditional dances. It’s a unique opportunity to experience Balinese culture up close.

3 reasons to visit Bali in August

  • Perfect weather for beach life and snorkelling, with high visibility in the sea
  • A great time for hiking in places like Munduk or on Mount Batur
  • Chance to experience the celebration of Indonesian Independence Day

Uganda – Wildlife in the national parks

Lion and lioness in the grass in Queen Elisabeth National Park in Uganda

Uganda is near the equator and therefore has stable and warm temperatures year-round. August marks the end of Uganda’s second dry season and is one of the driest months of the year.

The country is particularly known for the opportunity to see wild mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. In August, the trails in the national park are dry and easier to navigate than during the rainy seasons, providing good conditions for spotting the majestic gorillas.

The dry season is also a great time to go on safari in Uganda, for example in Lake Mburo National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park, where the animals are easier to spot as they gather around the waterholes, which become increasingly attractive as the dry season progresses.

3 reasons to visit Uganda in August

  • One of the driest months of the year
  • Dry trails make it easier to track gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
  • Easier to spot wildlife in the national parks as they gather around fewer waterholes

Tanzania – Safari and beach in perfect harmony

Traditional boat off the beach in Zanzibar, Tanzania

If you dream of incredible safari experiences combined with relaxation and a beach holiday, August is the perfect time to tour Tanzania.

The month falls within Tanzania’s dry season, offering warm temperatures, minimal rain, and ideal safari conditions in both the northern parks like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park, as well as the Nyerere and Ruaha national parks in Southern Tanzania.

During the dry season, you’re likely to witness Tanzania’s wildlife and perhaps tick off The Big Five on your safari bucket list. At this time of year, the vegetation in the national parks is sparser since it’s been months since the rainy season, making it harder for animals to hide.

Combine your safari holiday with a tour to Zanzibar, where you can process all the wild impressions under the palms on the island’s pristine white sandy beaches. Here, August brings warm, dry days with plenty of sunshine, perfect for a beach holiday and snorkelling in the vibrant coral reefs, where the sea visibility is excellent.

3 reasons to visit Tanzania in August

  • Dry season with mild weather and very little rain both in the north and south
  • Easier to spot animals in national parks due to sparse vegetation and fewer water access points
  • An ideal time to combine a safari & beach holiday in Zanzibar

Malaysia and Borneo – Scenic islands

Nose monkey in a tree in Bako National Park in Borneo, Malaysia

August is a wonderful month to explore Malaysia and the Malaysian part of Borneo.

Although weather can vary greatly across Malaysia, August is, for example, a good month to visit the islands off Malaysia’s east coast, such as Tioman Island and the Perhentian Islands.

This part of the country experiences its dry season in August, offering excellent beach conditions with plenty of sunshine and dry weather. Both the Perhentian Islands and Tioman Island provide great opportunities for snorkelling or diving during the dry season when the water is clearest.

Borneo generally sees rain all year round, but August is amongst its driest months, making it a great time to explore the island’s unique nature and wildlife, for example, in Sabah’s magical rainforests and Bako National Park in Sarawak.

Combine your tour of Malaysia with a stay in Singapore, which offers plenty of sunshine hours year-round. Every year, Singapore’s National Day is celebrated on the 9th of August with colourful parades, festivities, and fireworks—a spectacle that offers insight into the country’s pride and traditions.

3 reasons to visit Malaysia and Borneo in August

  • Dry and sunny weather on Malaysia’s east coast—perfect for the beach
  • Less rain in Borneo’s rainforests, ideal for exploring nature
  • A perfect time to combine with Singapore

Botswana – Great safari experiences

2 mokoros (traditional canoes) on the Okavango Delta in Botswana delta in Botswana

August falls within Botswana’s dry season, also known as the country’s winter.

The days are warm and sunny, while the mornings and evenings can be cool. The dry weather results in sparser vegetation, making wildlife easier to spot, especially as they gather at the few remaining waterholes.

In Chobe National Park, great safari experiences await. The warm daytime temperatures mean animals flock to the riverbanks to cool off. You may be lucky enough to see crocodiles, zebras, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, and many other species when visiting Chobe.

In the Okavango Delta, the water levels are high, attracting migratory animals in search of water, such as large herds of elephants. The high water levels also make August a perfect time to explore the delta from the water with a mokoro trip in a traditional canoe.

Kenya – Fantastic national parks

Zebras and wildebeest crossing the Mara River between Masai Mara and Serengeti

Kenya, one of the world’s best safari destinations, is an ideal travel destination in August.

Like many other East African countries, Kenya also experiences its dry season in August. The mild weather with very little rain makes it ideal for going on safari in many exceptional natural areas, such as the Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo East, and Tsavo West.

In the Masai Mara, you can witness one of nature’s most spectacular events as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River during the great migration. Many consider August to be one of the best months to experience this.

In the numerous national parks, the dry season means there are fewer water sources for the animals. As a result, they often gather in large herds around watering holes, where you can see them drinking water—for instance, large flocks of flamingos gather at Lake Nakuru or elephants in Amboseli.

After a safari holiday in Kenya, you could round off your adventure with a relaxing stay in Mauritius, where white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters await. August is one of the best months on the island, offering warm temperatures and a gentle breeze that makes the climate pleasant. You might also choose to combine Kenya with a tour to Madagascar.

Three reasons to visit Kenya in August

  • The opportunity to witness the great migration at the Mara River
  • Easier to spot animals gathering around water sources
  • A great time to combine with a tour to Madagascar or a beach holiday in Mauritius

You could, for example, see ring-tailed lemurs in Isalo National Park or the Indri lemur in Andasibe-Mantadia National Park.
